Cabinet decides to repeal post-emergency Pemra laws
The federal cabinet on Wednesday approved, in principle, to repeal all the press-gagging laws including those relating to Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) enacted on November 3 last year with the imposition of the emergency in the country.
"We will bring the law in the coming National Assembly session to repeal all those amendments to the Pemra Ordinance that were enacted on November 3," said Information Minister Sherry Rehman while briefing newsmen here on Wednesday at the Prime Minister’s Secretariat after the cabinet meeting , chaired by Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani.
When asked whether the government would also consider repealing all those clauses of the Pemra Act that were opposed by the journalists community, Sherry Rehman said in the first phase all the black laws enacted on November 3 will be repealed and if needed the Pemra Ordinance could be revised in consultation with the journalists community.
